"Make Believe It"

“Make Believe It”

I wrote this song while reflecting on the "make-believe" we all used to play as kids. It occurred to me that, in a way, "they" — whoever "they" are — make us believe things about the world, but mostly about ourselves. We're constantly told we're too much of this, not enough of that. In a lot of ways, we’ve internalized the belief that “I’m not good enough” to some degree.

Then, we grow up, have our own kids, and realize how perfectly imperfect they are. It’s oddly self-nourishing to see them through that lens — this little “aha moment” where we recognize that maybe, just maybe, we were perfectly imperfect too, just by being ourselves. But with that realization comes grief, grief for the pain we carried as kids, likely because we never felt good enough. Often, this came from the judgments and reactions of others.

Imagine how different our lives could be if we dared to believe that we are already good enough for the lives we dream of. What would we then dare to dream? What could we hope for? If we could live in the possibility that we are enough just as we are, what other possibilities could we explore?

And what if we challenge the beliefs that society has held for so long, the ones we’ve never dared to dream beyond? What if we could truly imagine the impossible?

What if we really did live forever, or if the sky above us was actually the ocean of another realm? Imagine if we let go of all the expected constructs and simply allowed ourselves to dream, to feel the emotions that arise from what we experience in our mind’s eye.

Watching my daughter Gracie discover the world is fascinating. If she wasn’t told everyone else's reasons to the questions she asks, she might just come up with her own answers. And isn’t that the beauty of pretending something into existence? Everything we now see — from televisions to airplanes, from electric lightbulbs to indoor plumbing — was once a seemingly impossible dream in someone’s "crazy" mind.

Just take a variety of creative breakthroughs such as dog collars, epidurals, or even hair dye. Who came up with the idea to color your hair? Or the invention of an internet search browser? I would have given anything as a kid to have Google at my fingertips. My point is this: if we were to write down everything we believe about relationships, work, money, friendships, spirituality, and culture, it would be fascinating to see how varied these beliefs are from person to person — and yet, how each of them has shaped our own limitations.

What if we threw all those beliefs aside — just for a day — and dared to dream the impossible? What if we pretended that all of it was real?

Quick thought: What makes one creation or dream feel more impossible than another? My guess is that it’s the collective social beliefs we’ve agreed upon that shape what’s possible. Take a global anti-gravity button — it might take longer to create, but maybe that’s because we’ve never let go of the belief that it can’t exist. But, if we left the kids alone and let them lead the way, maybe we’d learn something incredible. They are fresh from the source, unafraid to be wrong because they know there is no "right" way. They are brilliant, powerful, gifted geniuses of infinite intelligence. I’m so excited to see what the next generation will create.

But for those of us still on the leading edge, why not take a quantum leap into an alternate version of ourselves — just for a day? Let’s see what an ideal, impossible life could look like and feel like. Why not?

Oh, because it risks the predictable, boring days? Well, there’s even more reason to make believe!

Have fun with it.

Make Believe It (Lyrics)

By: Alexa Shea

Now is the appointed time,

Todays the day

great fortune of your blessings they are on the way

So dry your tears my love

You’ve no reason to cry,

Anymore- here’s why

Your prayers are heard and answered

Open up your heart

You’re worthy, there’s no question

You, "matter," -a star

and it’s your own reflection you see in the sky

They told you lies

And then made you believe that they were true

But you’re good enough

& ..What you want, wants you

Chorus

Make believe it

Find another way you can perceive it

Cuz Whispers of the night come from a me that is living my dreams in another  time. (Telling me to close my eyes)

imagine, everything I want’s about to happen

Think- “Wouldn’t it be nice?”

Feel that reaction, visualize practice, then sleep at night

That’s a way to change your life

Believe it

There nothing to fear, my dear, you’re good enough

And nothing bad can come from

Getting all you wan

cause every ship you love

Will rise with your tide.

Darling, dare to shine

It’s safe for you to ask for everything

Your closer than you think

Darling, I dare you dream

(Chorus repeat)

It's effortless to manifest

So effort a little less

It's effortless to manifest

Be blessed

(Chorus Repeat)
